Fall Greetings!

I can’t believe Summer is already over.

Highlights from the past six months include: my nephew Jacob and Courtney’s wedding celebration at La Finquita del Buho; my oldest son, Max, graduating from Portland State University with Summa Cum Laude in Environmental Science; time spent with family and friends at Manzanita Beach and Harstine Island; participating in a birdathon with the warbling yogis; hikes in the forest and along the gorge, visiting the Japanese, Rhododendron, and Chinese Gardens here in Portland; swimming at the Wilson River and witnessing thousands of tadpoles, rough skin newts and delicate wild orchids; camping in McMinnville; eating delicious food with friends and family; a week-long printmaking workshop at Mullowney Printing; and an incredibly inspiring online workshop with my mentors Rosenclaire and other workshoppers from around the world.

The record high temperatures and devastating fires in Maui, Canada, California, Oregon, and around the world are a reminder that so much change is needed!

600 year old White Oak at the 5 Oaks Historic Site

600 year old White Oak at the Five Oaks Historic Site in Helvetia, Oregon

The Five Oaks Museum is an inspirational museum that values body, land, truth, justice, community. Replenish the Roots: Six Centuries of Gathering Under The Oaks takes visitors through a layered history of the stand of ancient trees the museum is now named after. If you live near Portland I highly recommend you visit!

I am very grateful for receiving a month-long residency award at Playa in January of 2024. I spent 10 glorious days there on a residency in 2016 in late February. I am eager to return to this expansive landscape and immerse myself in my art practice.

Thank you Grace Kook-Anderson, Mary Weaver Chapin, and Kathleen Ash-Milby  for your support and the purchase of the deluxe Owed to The Mountain artist book for the Portland Art Museum’s permanent collection. I am honored for this prestigious acquisition!

Owed to The Mountain is part of The Decatur Arts Alliance eleventh edition of the juried exhibition The Book as Art V. 11: Myth & Magic Sept. 7 – October 30, 2023 at the Decatur Branch of the DeKalb County Public Library in Georgia.

Our arts4action March fund raiser was a huge success!!! We collectively raised over $31,000 to support women and girls in a rural region in India. Women in a tea estate village in Assam, India identified that a lack of access to menstrual pads is causing girls to miss school and women to miss work, contributing to inequitable conditions. Working with the Numi Foundation and the nonprofit Women’s Earth Alliance (WEA) the money provided an entire village of 3500 girls and women menstrual pads for up to two years plus related educational support. Thank you everyone who purchased artwork! I sold 7of my original Sumi ink animal drawings.

We are a collective of artists mentored by rosenclaire. Our first action was in response to the war in Ukraine. In 2022, arts4action raised over USD $27,000 (of $150,000 total), which went towards the Clean Water for Ukraine program that provided 80,000 internally displaced Ukrainians with water filtration systems. The action was administered by Numi Foundation and  Waves for Water

Together we make a difference!

Exposing the inside: inverted stitched fruit

This series of work is in progress. I am experimenting with carefully cutting the skin of various fruits and turning them inside out. I stitch them back together exposing the inside. Thank you Sam Slater for photography advice. More to come.

Ink blots explored at Mullowney Printing

I had a tremendous time experimenting with photogravure etching under the tutelage of Paul Mullowney. A remarkable studio with talented co-directors Harry Schneider, Paul Mullowney and printer extraordinaire Alejandra Arias Sevilla. I learned about chine collé using freshly cooked wheat paste and the joys of gampi paper. The artist cohort working in the studio that week were very inspiring: Nora Pauwels, Sade DuBoise, Marjorie Dial, Sam Slater, Christine Bourdette, Roger Peet, and Kristin Miller. I hope to have new opportunities to collaborate.

I am working on three one-of-a-kind inkblot accordion books to be ready for my table at CODEX in February. I am blown away by the intricate detail, element of chance, and endless possibility.

Self-portraits morphing with the plant kingdom

Thanks to Max for taking these photos of me embodying different personas. This experience was freeing and playful. I hope to continue working in this vein.
