I created this lithograph of Mt. Hood at Kala Art Institute in November of 2017 with the help of Cedar Kirwin. It will be one of 4 different prints in my sculptural artist book about the mountain. The project received a Regional Art and Culture Council project grant on May 31, 2019. I plan to complete it in 2021. My eldest son, Max, and I camped at Warm Springs Reservation in July. Artist and educator Jefferson Greene introduced us to elders from the community and we started the process of recording stories that will be transcribed as part of the project. Mountains are sacred places.
Another mountain needing protection is Maunakea from the building of a new 30 meter high telescope, TMT. A group of respected Kupuna (Hawaiian elders) have been holding down a sacred roadblock on Maunakea since the date of announced construction (July 15). The movement is powerful – a testament to indigenous leaders and community coming together to stand up to protect ancestral land. #Maunakea . For more information.
I am excited to share images of Interwoven Alphabet a collaborative edition of two artist’s books created over an 8 month period by me and Alisa Banks. Each edition consists of 26 half-inch thick squares of felt for the pages. Each page features imagery on the faces. Words are stitched along the four narrow edges of each page. Imagery and words correspond to the letter of the alphabet assigned to the page. Together we chose four words per letter with sound playing a role in the final selection. Themes include: relationships, nature, the senses, time, politics, and the environment. The pages were exchanged back and forth between Portland and Dallas, responding to each other’s marks until all were completed.
